Pine Tree Festival--63 years old!The Pine Tree Festival & Southeast Timber EXPO is held each year to celebrated the impact of the timber industry on this area's economy. It is held the 1st weekend in May each year. Organized in 1946 by the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club, the Pine Tree Festival is a two-week event paying tribute to this area's vast forestry resources. Highlights of the event include lumberjack shows, beauty contests, auto races, golf tournament, live history reenactment, arts & crafts, wildlife exhibits, forestry exhibits, antique cars & trucks, helicopter rides, entertainment and much more. On Saturday, the first weekend in May, a huge parade is planned for the downtown area with floats, bands, beauty queens, dignitaries and Shriners. The crowd then moves to the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Recreational Complex on McLeod Bridge Road for the Southeast Timber EXPO. The celebration centers around delicious foods cooked over open flames, many in authentic wash pots. Be sure to try sweet potatoes boiled in pine resin--you'll never eat a better sweet potato. Other favorites are fried chicken, barbecue, Brunswick stew, lacy corn bread, chicken & dumplings, creamed corn, butterbeans and much more. Canoochee Day Lily FestivalThe beauty of this local flower is on full display during this day-long event in the heart of downtown Canoochee, Ga. Set for the first Saturday in June each year, the festival is sponsored by the local volunteer fire department. Arts & crafts, entertainment, games for young and old and a tour of the local day lily gardens are featured. Call 478-237-5219 for more information. Arts Emanuel FestivalThe Art Council's fall festival is delight for all ages. Held in September the event features arts & crafts, food, and many local homemade items. Sidewalk chalk drawings, music, face drawings and local vendors make this an event you don't want to miss. All children's activities are free. Carmichael Complex located on McLeod Bridge Road in Swainsboro, is the setting for this traditional firework display celebrating our nation's birthday. Sponsored by the Swainsboro Jaycees, the event is great for lawn chairs and a picnic. |
