The Swainsboro Downtown Development Authority
and the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of
Commerce's annual "Christmas Parade and Carols
on the Square" will be held this Thursday, December
5th, in downtown Swainsboro.
At press time over 85 entries were expected for the
parade. The parade will feature dancers, bands,
floats, beauty queens and a special visit by Santa.
Last year some 2,000 to 2,500 people were in town for
the event. This year's crowd is expected to be even
larger.
The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. near BB&T and
proceed north on U.S 1, turning on to Pine Street. The
parade route will then turn south on Green Street,
ending at the Boneyard.
At 6:30 p.m. on Roger Shaw Street, members of
local church groups and singers will entertain. The
Houston Sisters, a local favorite, will perform.
Local vendors and artists will set up with special
Christmas goodies and art for sale. This year's Relay-
For-Life Committee will also hold a chili-cookoff.
During the event, the Pilot Club will light their
annual "Lite-A-Lite" tree.
Sponsoring organizations include the Swainsboro
Downtown Development Authority, Swainsboro-
Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce, Emanuel
County Arts Council, and the Pilot Club.

Great News!!! |

On Tuesday afternoon, November 24th, in a special
called meeting, members of the East Georgia College
Foundation approved the transfer of ten acres of
property adjacent to the north campus to East Georgia
College for the construction of on campus housing.
The historic vote was unanimous and paves the way
for the construction of a 200-bed housing facility.
With financing available through the Georgia Higher
Education Financing Authority, the plan is to begin
construction in mid-2010. The two bedroom
apartment style residences will be available for
student occupancy in the fall of 2011.
Earlier this year, with funding provided by the college's
Foundation, the firm of Anderson Strickler,
Washington D.C., was contracted to do a housing
needs assessment for East Georgia College. The
survey revealed the college could support 192 beds
immediately.
"We are very excited about housing on our campus
and the impact it will have both on the college and
economically on our community," stated Dr. John
Black, president of East Georgia College."Adding
student housing to the dynamics will serve not only to
put us on the list of college possibilities for students
from all over Georgia, it will enhance the college
experience for the current student on campus."
2009 has been a banner year for the college with the
addition of housing and intercollegiate athletics. This
winning combination will have a positive impact not
only on the college but on the entire service area.
Coordination of the construction project will be
handled by East Georgia College staff and the
University System of Georgia's facilities office. Hal
Gibson Companies, with offices in West Point, Ga.
and Pooler, Ga. will be the Program Manager for the
project. The architectural design contract was
awarded to Palmer Architects from Statesboro, GA.
Managing the construction will be Fortune-Johnson, a
firm based in Norcross, GA. Local subcontractors will
be utilized whenever possible on the project.
Information on the procedure for local participation will
be published when it is available.
