East Georgia Healthcare makes announcement

Earlier this month, East Georgia Heathcare Center purchased the former Winn Dixie/Rite Aid Shopping Complex property from the Swainsboro-Emanuel County Joint Development Authorities. EGHC will relocate all 3 of its present Swainsboro offices, including 2 patient offices, into a new expanded facility. News of the purchase and construction project was made public by Jennie Wren Denmark, CEO of EGHC, at special ceremonies held Monday, December 13, 2010 at the site.

According to Denmark, the shell of the building will remain intact, with a new facade constructed to give the appearance of a new facility. The Winn Dixie building along with two adjacent stores will be completely gutted and renovated to include multiple exam rooms and procedure rooms. Construction plans also include mental health offices and a mental health group therapy room.  In addition, the new facility will house all administrative and management offices.

The cost of the purchase and renovations is listed at $2.1 million. EGHC received $698,315 from HRSA through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) signed by President Obama in February of 2009.  The remainder of the construction cost is being provided through interim financing from the Citizens Bank of Swainsboro and permanent loan financing from the USDA through ARRA funds.  Expected completion date is early summer of 2011.  Local contractor Simmons-McKenzie Construction, LLC (Bill Simmons & Greg McKenzie) will be in charge of the project.  According to Bill Simmons, they will use local sub-contractors (within a 30 mile radius) with total workers estimated at 33.

Plans call for the current offices located at 316 North Main Street to be converted into health education class rooms and file storage.

East Georgia Heathcare Center currently has offices in Swainsboro, Soperton, Mount Vernon, Vidalia, Metter, Statesboro and Reidsville. The company employs 90 people with an annual budget of $7.9 million. The Center receives some $2.6 million in federal grants.

EGHC has an annual payroll of $4.7 million. Of the 90 employees, 53 are employed in Emanuel County resulting in an annual payroll of more than $2.5 million locally.

According to Denmark once the project is completed in 2011, an additional 4 health providers and 15 support staff will be added to the staff here in Emanuel County. This will add an additional $1.5 million to current payroll.

"We are certainly excited about this new venture. For many years we have battled space problems and parking issues. Our present location limited our growth potential at a time when we are faced with growing demand for our services. We think these new facilities will allow us to better serve our patients. We appreciate the assistance of Mayor Charles Schwabe, the Swainsboro-Emanuel County Joint Development Authorities, the Chamber of Commerce, Kathy Ross with USDA, the EGHC Board of Directors and US Congressman John Barrow who assisted us in this project."

Open Letter to Membership from your President:

Dear Chamber Members:

Can you believe it's the start of another year? 2010 went by incredibly fast. In retrospect, the past twelve months have to be seen as another tough year for our local economy and the nation's as a whole. While unemployment hovered slightly above the 10% mark, we have been very fortunate and blessed as a community not to see numerous plant failures or businesses closing their doors. While it has been a difficult business environment, we have seen some very important accomplishments made that should yield dividends in the future.

So as not to break with tradition, you'll find this "open letter" to the membership listing some of the noteworthy achievements and activities of 2010.

While we are pleased with these accomplishments, we are hopeful that 2011 will be brighter and better for all. Chairman Kenny Griffin and the Chamber's Board of Directors are to be commended for their vision and hard work. They have provided guidance and leadership during these tough times.

Due to the mid-year resignation of Andy Riley, President of the Joint Development Authorities, we have assumed some of the county's economic development duties. We continue to assist the JDA until such time as they fill this position. We have been most fortunate to have Jack Bareford step in to assist us in these efforts. While these additional activities have presented many challenges, we hope we haven't "dropped the ball" on any significant chamber activities.

I would like to thank the Chamber staff for their help and dedication during the year. Without Donna Brinson and Shanna Taylor, our efforts might have fallen short of the mark. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated staff that works diligently to promote and enhance our county every day. Please thank them whenever you have an opportunity.

As we said in last year's January newsletter, we know there are still difficult economic times ahead for our county, state and nation. In the past, these downturns have been cyclical in nature and given time, the economy will improve. Our pledge is that we will continue to work hard to merit our members' financial commitment to the chamber.

We hope this report meets with your approval and again in 2011, we can count on you for your renewed interest and membership.

                                                             Sincerely

                                                             Bill Rogers Jr.,

                                                             President
