| Do you remember the good times? |
 |
|
The Emanuel County Historical Preservation Society
is sponsoring a Sam's Drive-In reunion benefit
to "save the rocket ship sign."
For those too young to remember, the lighted,
rocket-ship shaped sign towered over U.S. 1 signaling
Sam's Drive-In, a place for good food and great times,
was just ahead. The sign was a landmark for many
years in Swainsboro and was located on U.S. 1 South
near Maryland Fried Chicken. The Society has
undertaken the job of refurbishing the sign which will
be housed at the Emanuel County Historical
Preservation Museum.
On Saturday, July 12th at 8 p.m., Sam's Drive-In
Band will be in concert at the Jaycee Fairgrounds. All
profits will go toward the restoration of the sign.
Advanced tickets are $10 for adults/$12 at the door
with children tickets, 12 & under, at $5. Tickets are
available at many local merchants.
In addition, antique cars and trucks from the 50s, 60s
and 70s will be on display.
Local radio personality Jimmy Page will serve as
MC for the event. Make your plans now to attend.

| SBA launches tax saving resource center |
 |
|
The SBA has created an online resource center to
help small businesses understand how they can
benefit from the 2008 economic stimulus package
signed into law by President Bush earlier in the year.
The package includes the following tax incentives for
businesses: a 50% bonus depreciation allowance on
equipment and placed in service in calendar 2008
and an almost 100% increase in the amount (from
$128,000 to $250,000) that a business can expense
for equipment purchased and placed in business tax
year beginning in 2008.
"The stimulus package is designed to spur the
economy by putting money back into the pockets of
American workers and encouraging small business
to invest and expand," said SBA acting Administrator
Jovita Carranza. "However, many small business
owners are unaware of how it could boost their bottom
line."
SBA's new tax savings resource center demonstrates
the benefits entrepreneurs can gain from the 2008
economic stimulus package. The center, located on
www.sbagov/stimulus, contains three resources on
the package: a fact sheet, depreciation calculator and
online seminar. Small businesses are encouraged to
contact their tax advisors to determine exactly how the
provisions and implementing tax code of 2008
economic stimulus package apply to their business.-

Huber meeting held at Chamber |
|
|
|
Members of the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Joint
Development Authorities, Chamber of Commerce and
officials from Huber Engineered Woods, Inc. met
Monday afternoon to discuss plans on the proposed
oriented strand board (OSB) plant that has been
announced for Swainsboro. The proposed $300
million dollar plant was delayed last year due to a
decline in the nation's housing market.
Following the meeting, Andy Riley, President of the
Joint Development Authorities, issued the following
statement:
"Huber Engineered Woods Inc. continues to be
committed with plans to construct an Oriented Strand
Board plant here in Emanuel County. With conditions
in the housing market in a state of decline, the project
continues to be delayed which is understandable. We
have renewed our "Memorandum of Understanding"
for another twelve months in hopes that these
conditions improve. As a community, we continue to
be committed to Huber."
