Eggs & Issues is held
Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Emanuel County Farm Bureau, held an "Eggs & Issues" breakfast on Saturday morning, February 20th, at Emanuel Medical Center. Over 70 people were in attendance to hear Representative Butch Parrish and State Senator Jack Hill present a brief overview of the legislative session to date, which has dealt primarily with resolving the state's huge budget deficit. According to Senator Hill, state revenues are down approximately 25%. Emanuel County Commissioner James Canady urged the legislators to look at an increase in gasoline sales tax as a way to supplement Georgia's Department of Transportation. Others voiced concerns on the increase in property taxes. "Everything is on the table at this point as we attempt to balance the state budget," stated Rep. Butch Parrish.
Pine Tree Festival unveils new website!
The Pine Tree Festival and Southeast Timber EXPO has a new website. The new site, pinetreefestival.org, gives the very latest information on this year's upcoming event, including the schedule of events, announcements, vendor information, sponsorship information and photos from previous festivals.
Another new event added to this year's Pine Tree Festival and Southeast Timber EXPO will be a "Forestry Field Day" for area landowners and timber growers. The field day will be held Thursday afternoon, April 29th, at the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Recreation Complex beginning at 1 p.m. Exhibits will be set up on a circular path just off the Walking Trail at Swainsboro/Emanuel County Recreational Complex on McLeod Bridge Road. The exhibits will feature educational demonstrations and discussions ranging from "fire control burning" to "pond management." "We're very excited about our new Forestry Field Day and the huge response we are getting from forest-related entities," stated Russ Yeomans, co-chairman of the event. Following Forestry Field Day, at 5 p.m., will be the Georgia Forestry Association Regional Forestry Meeting with certified classes available for landowners and timber professionals. A barbecue dinner will follow.
Emanu'ole Opry is set to return!!!
Emanu'ole Opry is returning to Swainsboro and Emanuel County! The event, will be held on March 5th at the Luck Gambrell Auditorium at East Georgia College, beginning at 7 p.m. Presented by Emanuel Arts Council, the showcase for local musicians always plays to a packed house. Tickets are now available at the Emanuel Arts Center. Call 237-2592 for more information.
Plans underway for Wash Pot Festival!
The 12th Annual Wash Pot Festival will be held in downtown Garfield on May 14th and May 15th. The event will include a fishing tournament, beauty pageant, crafters and vendors, auction, parade, lawn mower races, and much more. The delicious array of Wash Pot food will be served starting at 11 a.m. until the food runs out. That evening, a street dance will close out the event. Entertainment will be provided by "Smokin Mirrors" from St Augustine, Fla. Admission is $3 for day and night activities. For more information call 763-2211 or 912-690-2719.

Emanuel County's Relay for Life has been set for Friday night, April 23rd. The event will be held at the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Recreation Department Complex on McLeod Bridge Road. Kenny Griffin is chairman of this year's event. For more information call 237-6426.

Chamber Banquet is held!
The 56th Annual Banquet of the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce was held Thursday night, Feb. 4th, in the Richard L. Brown Room at East Georgia College. With nearly 170 people in attendance, the event was a sold out affair. The theme of this year's event was "Come Join Us. . . into the Future." Bill Rogers Jr., president of the chamber, welcomed guests and recalled highlights and successes from the previous year. Following the invocation by Dr. Bobby Sasser, Milton Gray, past chairman of the board of directors, presented awards to outgoing directors. Athen Walden, chairman-elect, presented certificates to the 2009 Leadership Emanuel Class. In award presentations, Swainsboro Supply Company was named the "2009-2010 Small Business of the Year," while Stitch in Print was named the "Large Business of the Year". The highlight of the banquet was the naming of the "Person of the Year". This year's recipient was Emanuel County Commissioner Desse Davis. The crowd enjoyed viewing a power point with pictures of his youth and coaching days. The award was given in recognition of his outstanding service to the community. His daughter, Natalie Davis, introduced the recipient. In addition to the annual chamber awards, special recognition was given to this year's STAR students and teachers. Swainsboro High School's Miriam Durden was named STAR winner. Teri Price was named her STAR teacher. At Emanuel County Institute, David Hodges was named STAR student, with Glenn Turner named STAR teacher at the school. It marked the tenth occasion Mr. Turner had been named STAR Teacher Evan Simmons was the STAR student representing David Emanuel Academy. Sally Grover was named as her STAR teacher. Mr. Simmons is also system STAR student.
